The Rooster Who Loved "Star Trek"

I once knew a lady named Marian who lived in a small apartment in the city. Like me, she was a fervent animal lover, even when the animal in question was totally and completely inappropriate for her.
One year at Easter, her grown-up daughter presented Marian with the ultimate Easter present--a tiny, cute, fuzzy, adorable peep! A little Easter peep! Awwwwwww! Who could say no to a present like that? Marian couldn't, that was for sure.
When I heard about this ridiculous situation, my first instinct was to laugh. My next instinct was to say "Oh, the poor little thing! Living in a bathtub is no life for a peep! Let me take it, oh pleaseohpleaseohplease!"
My only qualification for peep ownership was that I didn't live in an apartment in the city. I lived in a quiet, semi-rural area where dogs and cats were the norm, not roosters-to-be.
But my husband was game; he even constructed a serviceable chicken coop in the back yard and filled it with straw. Brewster the Rooster had a real home at last!
Brewster and Jack took to each other immediately. Somehow, Brewster was able to tell when Jack's car pulled into the driveway every day after work, and no matter where he was in the yard, Brewster would race to greet him, his little orange legs pumping furiously.. Dad was home!
Then began the afternoon ritual. "Dad" would pick Brewster up and go calling on the neighbors. Our neighbors at the time were elderly folks who had a soft spot for Brewster, taking them back in time to their childhood on The Farm. A little cock-a-doodle-doodling didn't bother them a bit.
After visiting for a while, it was time to (what else?) watch a little TV. And, as luck would have it, "Star Trek" was on! Life for this rooster was good. He would perch on the piano bench in front of the television (with plenty of newspaper under his posterior region) and he and dad would watch Captain Picard and Data. (Brewster preferred "The Next Generation" because the special effects in the original series were so lame.) Sometimes dad would fix him a little snack of cracked corn to munch on while they watched.
When the last notes of the closing theme died away, Brewster knew it was time for bed. Back to the chicken coop he went, ready to fight the good fight against the Borg in his dreams.
Brewster the Rooster was a great pet, one of the most memorable in a long line of memorable pets we've had the privilege of owning. The following Easter, I gave Marian a glossy photo of her adorable little peep, all grown up and a full-fledged Trekkie!
